![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You know, those caricatures of finger-waving, eye-rolling Black women at whom everyone loves to laugh-women like Tyler Perry’s Madea, Mammy in Gone with the Wind, or Nell from that old eighties sitcom Gimme a Break! These kinds of Black women put white folks at ease. When it comes to Black women, sometimes Americans don’t recognize that sass is simply a more palatable form of rage. And that’s the place where more women should begin-with the things that make us angry. To be clear, I’m not really into self-help books, so I don’t have one of those catchy three-step plans for changing the world. These women want to change things but don’t know where to begin. This is a book for women who know shit is fucked up. This is a book for women who expect to be taken seriously and for men who take grown women seriously. This is a book by a grown-ass woman written for other grown-ass women. ![]() ![]() The neighborhood is changing, too: all around the Fillmore, white men in suits are approaching Black property owners with offers. I need to get back to rehearsal.” “Please, let go of me.” The words scrape the sides of my raw throat. As one of the best, he gets away with more than most. God knows this man has unconventional coaching methods. I have no idea where we are or what he has planned. We drove thirty minutes to an unfamiliar neighborhood, well outside of the city. Mid-way through rehearsal for Giselle, he pulled me from the stage and hauled me out of the theater with a look of disgust on his aristocratic face. My ballet coach, Baker, has my arm in a vise grip and no amount of convincing will make him release me. They’re caked in filth and puddle water, growing more and more soaked by the moment as I’m dragged forcefully through the dingy, moonlit alley. I’ve just broken in this pair of pointe shoes and they’re already ruined. ![]() One night with wild eyed Smith should cure her of any interest in romance, says Posy’s coach, as he locks her inside a room with a monster…and a mattress. Instead, he drags her-still dressed in a tutu and pointe shoes-to his reclusive brother’s door, located in an abandoned warehouse. Posy has reached the height of her ballet career, but if you ask her coach, she is merely mediocre and distracted by the male dancers, which couldn’t be further from the truth. ![]() ![]() Since that momentous day we had excavated in every major site in Egypt and written extensively on our discoveries. More than being unappreciated, skunks, Miller reveals, have a long history of persecution: killed off as smelly nuisances, they have also been hunted for their fur and, yes, their unique musk, which has found a perhaps unexpected use in perfume. and oh, boy, when they do it, no one can ignore them.īut there’s far more to skunks than their stench, and with this beautifully illustrated entry in Reaktion’s Animal series, Alyce Miller gives these furry scavengers their due. Solitary, nocturnal creatures, skunks generally go about their business unnoticed. ![]() ![]() ![]() I do, however, take issue when an author other than the Rain Man insists, as Gildiner repeatedly does, that she remembers VERBATIM what someone said in any given situation. They must be embellished and expanded in order to form a fully-developed narrative. Sure, it's probably based on actual memories (which are themselves imperfect, diluted by time and prone to subjectivity) but recollections alone do not a good book make. ![]() When reading a memoir, I automatically assume that most of what the author writes is actually fiction. On another level, what we have here is an over-the-top sales pitch on what an unusual and extraordinary life young Catherine led. On the surface, Catherine Gildiner has written a "memoir" of growing up near Niagara Falls and her experiences as an overly precocious, conspicuously intelligent only child with a talent for athletics, philosophy, reading, and just about everything else, apparently. ![]() ![]() ![]() Save up to 80 versus print by going digital with VitalSource. ![]() Access a growing selection of included Audible Originals, audiobooks and podcasts.
